Medicaid is government sponsored health insurance that helps individuals pay for all or most of their health care costs when their own income or resources don’t enable them to do so themselves. What are the requirements for medicaid eligibility?

Income Limits

Limited income is one of the key eligibility requirements to receive Medicaid, whose specific requirements vary from state to state. Medicaid does not disperse any money directly to you, but instead makes bill payments directly to your health care providers.

Fitting Required Category

In addition to meeting the requirement of having limited financial income and resources, you must also fit into one of the following categories to be eligible to receive Medicaid: You must be 65 years of age or older, blind or otherwise disabled, currently pregnant whether married or single, or parent to a child or children under the age of 18 in need of medical care, you are a teenager living on your own with limited resources and a need for ongoing medical care, you have been classified as permanently disabled, you are leaving the welfare system and have no other means of health insurance, or currently live in a nursing home.

Citizenship Status

Most Medicaid recipients must also be living in the U.S. legally if they are not already American citizens. If you are not a U.S. citizen or a legal resident, your child may still be eligible to receive Medicaid based on their status. Once you are accepted for Medicaid, any child born to you is also eligible for benefits.

Medical Needs

Having an income level over the state’s eligibility limit doesn’t necessarily disqualify you for Medicaid, because you may be able to apply under the state’s “medically needy” program guidelines. An individual whose spouse has entered a nursing home can often qualify for Medicaid even through the couple’s income may exceed Medicaid limits.
