What Are Medicaid Waivers?

What is the purpose of a Medicaid waiver?

Medicaid waivers are designed to help elderly or developmentally disabled individuals remain in their homes or in the community rather than being institutionalized. Generally, persons age 18 and over who qualify for medicaid nursing home programs would also qualify for Medicaid Waivers. Community based services are less expensive overall. So Medicaid Waivers can save money while benefiting qualified individuals and their families. For some families, community based services are the best option.

Services covered by Medicaid waivers

Medicaid waiver services that are authorized by states include support for community living. An example of this service would be supported living programs for developmentally disabled adults. Group homes are supported community living programs. Behavioral support is also a Medicaid waiver service. Behavioral support often involves hiring a qualified paraprofessional to take the client to events, school, medical appointments, etc. and monitor them to assure that behavior is appropriate. It also involves behavioral intervention and teaching behavioral skills as needed. Other services that might be available through Medicaid waivers are twenty-four hour care and dental services.

How you can learn more about Medicaid waivers

If you think you or someone you know might qualify for a Medicaid waiver, the best way to find out for sure is to contact your local social services agency. Depending on the state, this agency may be the Department of Social Services, Department of Family Services, or the Department of Human Services. Your local Social Security office might also be able to provide some information on where you can go to apply for a Medicaid waiver. Medicaid waivers are administered at the state level, but federal funding is provided. So there may be some services covered in some states that would not be covered by others. But if you are looking for a way to help your loved one receive help for care that will allow them to remain somewhat independent and in the community, a Medicaid waiver may be the answer.
