How Will I Receive My Medical Care If I Am On Medicaid?
Medicaid provides health care whenever you need it. But how will you receive this care?
Medicaid is a program that is mutually funded by American States in cooperation with the federal government. This program repays doctors and hospitals for providing medical care to people enlisted in the Medicaid program. Medicaid reaches out to people who cannot pay for their medical expenses. Specifically, these people are from the low income group. Their dependents are also eligible for Medicaid programs.
What does Medicaid cover?
Medicaid provides health cover for almost all types of health problems. However, the medical cover also depends on the state you are living in. You can contact your state’s Medicaid or social services division for these details.
How will this cover be provided?
Once you know you are eligible, you should apply in your state’s Medicaid division. When your application is processed, you will be provided a Medical Identification (MID) card. This will be your insurance card. You will not have to pay for any doctor fees or hospital expenses. But, there might be instances when you have to make a co-payment.
Medical coverage depends on the needs of the patients and their illnesses. People over the age of 21 normally don’t have any life threatening disease. So, they can only get 6 prescriptions in a month.
What happens when you get ill?
If you fall ill and have to avail the services of your physician, you will have to show the card to your doctor or the physician giving you a prescription. You cannot pay for the services availed at the hospital and then request Medicaid to pay you. You should, in the first place, visit the doctor who accepts Medicaid.
Medicaid pays for the services of your doctor, X-ray and laboratory charges, eyeglasses, ambulance, nursing facilities etc. Medicaid insured people with disabilities may receive medical services at home. Some states also offer non-Medicaid community care services. Medicaid pays for frequent checkups, especially in the case of children. The Medicaid ID card will list all the scheduled checkups.
