Does Medicaid Cover My Prescription Medications?
Medicaid and prescription coverage varies according to the state the Medicaid recipient lives in. Although the basic answer to the question, does Medicaid cover my prescription medications, is yes, coverage of certain prescriptions may not be covered. The government allows each state to choose whether or not they will cover prescriptions and what prescriptions they choose to cover, as long as they stay within the federal required guidelines. All 50 states agreed to cover prescription medications, as did the District of Columbia.
Does Medicaid Cover My Prescription Medications?
All individuals who are under the Medicaid program receive prescription medication coverage. Others who may be eligible for Medicaid may also receive this benefit although there are exceptions to this, again, according to the individual state.
Restrictions For Prescription Medications
Does Medicaid cover my prescription medications if I have more than one prescription? Some states have chosen to limit the amount of prescriptions that each individual can obtain per month. Other states require participants to pay a co-payment on each prescription. Certain people are eligible to receive a waiver on co-pays and the Federal laws exempt pregnant women, minors and some people that are institutionalized from paying any co-payment. This law also states that no person can be refused from prescription coverage because of their inabilities to pay.
Individual States Drug Lists
Does Medicaid cover my prescription medications for all my prescriptions? Most states have a list of drugs that they cover with their Medicaid Prescription Drug Plan. Although the list covers many different drugs, not all are included. If a patient needs a certain medication that is not on the list, an appeal may be made when the medication is medically necessary. For more detailed information, individuals should contact their state Medicaid office.
