Can Medicare take your home to pay for nursing home care?
Concerned about protecting your assets? Find out about Medicare and your home in the event of a nursing home admission.
Many people, as they begin to grow a little older, have legitimate concerns about the assets that they have. They’ve worked hard their entire lives and find that one or both of them require nursing home care.
What happens to your assets when you need nursing home care? Can Medicare take your home to pay for nursing home care?
The question isn’t quite so simple to answer. If only one of you requires the care of a nursing home following a hospital stay of more than three days, then Medicare does not normally seek any real reimbursement for the stay in a nursing home. This means that there would not be a risk of your home being taken. Which doesn’t answer the question “Can Medicare take your home to pay for nursing home care” completely, however.
So, Can Medicare Take Your Home to Pay for Nursing Home Care?
The full answer to that is that in most cases Medicare will not take your home to pay for nursing home care, but in some instances they can. Long term care in a nursing home is a bit different than requiring care after a surgical procedure or an illness.
How can Medicare take your home to pay for nursing home care? If you are admitted to a nursing home for long term care Medicare will take part of any income that the two of you have, such as pensions and other incomes. So long as one or the other spouse remains in the home it won’t be considered as part of the assets to pay for the long term nursing care. If both of you no longer live in the home however, Medicare can take steps to get their reimbursement from the value of your home.
