What is independent living?

What is independent living? Enjoy your life within an Independent Living facility!! Stay active and be free in your golden years!!

An independent living facility is a housing arrangement designed for senior citizens who can care for themselves, but want the comfort of onsite medical assistance and the security of senior living. This article will give you characteristics of independent living facilities.

Candidates for Independent Living

Ideal candidates are senior citizens (minimum age of 55 to 62), who are healthy and can care for themselves. Most residents of independent living facilities choose to move into the facilities because they desire the security of senior communities, enjoy being around their peers, don’t want to have to maintain their homes, and have access to onsite medical staff.

Services Provided by Independent Living Facilities

Amenities provided in independent living facilities can vary, but common services provided by these facilities commonly include housekeeping services, exercise facilities, activity rooms, clubhouses, golf courses, beauty salons, local transportation, security, and educational activities. Many independent living facilities will also organize small trips and other social activities.

Costs of Independent Living Facilities

The cost of living in an independent living facility varies significantly. The cheapest independent living facilities are partially subsidized by charities, or HUD. Since healthcare is not in the cost of independent living facilities, Medicare and Medicaid do not pay for independent living facilities. Mid range cost facilities are normally rental facilities. Depending on where your facility is located and the quality of the facility monthly rent ranges from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars per month.
More expensive facilities require you to purchase a condo within the community, and then pay a monthly service fee which can be a few thousand dollars per month. These are premier facilities, and the condo can be sold back upon your departure from the facility.
