What is a nursing home?

What is a Nursing Home? Give yourself, your friends, or your family the medical attention they deserve by moving them into a nursing home!!

A nursing home, often called a skilled nursing facility, is a care home which meets the daily medical care needed by the elderly. Nursing homes provide physical, mental, and other rehabilitative therapies needed following an illness or serious physical accident. This article will help answer your questions regarding nursing homes.

Services Provided by Nursing Homes

Services provided can vary significantly, and generally improve with increased cost. All nursing homes will provide you with a furnished room, 24 hour nursing supervision, access to medical supplies, prepared meals, constant evaluation, housekeeping, and local transportation (if you are fit to leave). Other nursing homes may include additional perks including dental services, and social activities.

Living Situations Within Nursing Homes

Living situations also vary based on cost. A basic package normally includes a bedroom and bathroom shared with one other patient. Private rooms will normally cost more. Upon request, most nursing homes will allow a couple to share the same room. Many nursing homes will provide a pullout couch for the patient’s visitors to sleep on to ease the patients nerves.

Cost of Nursing Home

A nursing home on average costs $175 per day, which can cost over $65,000 per year. Higher end nursing homes have been known to charge up to $500 per day, or close to $200,000 per year. To help with the cost of nursing home care, Medicare will help handle a portion of the financial burden. Medicare will pay for your first 20 days in a nursing home, but afterwards, you are required to pay a daily deductible which varies based on your situation. You also must prove that you are making progress towards independence in order to keep coverage.

  1. I am not the type to bother posting comments on peoples’ blogs generally nevertheless after stumbling across yours I decided I would shoot a little line to give me a short break from working. I must admit that I’ve gotten somewhat sidetracked going through and browsing some of your posts… I should probably be working. Keep up the great writing and i’m already looking forward to exploring future posts. Take care!
