What are the Benefits of Assisted Living?
Seniors who want to continue to live on their own may find that assisted living provides the answers they need to remain independent.
Assisted living provides an alternative to elderly people who are not able to live on their own but who do not need the range of services that nursing homes provide. Typically, the residents of assisted living facilities have trouble performing one or more daily living skills, such as dressing, eating, or one or more housekeeping chores. While they may have health problems, they do not need constant care.
Assisted Living Promotes Independence
By residing in an assisted living facility, the elderly can retain a certain amount of independence. Assisted living facilities offer a home like setting that is far different from the institutional care that is provided in a nursing home. Some assisted living facilities are small and are actually in a real home while others are much larger and resemble an apartment living situation.
Assisted Living Offers Needed Services
Different assisted living facilities offer different services so it is important to find out the range of services offered at any facility you are considering. While some assisted living facilities offer basic services such as housekeeping, help with dressing or bathing, and meal preparation, other facilities also offer health care. It is important to be aware of the range of services needed and then match them up with a facility that provides those services. It is also important to keep in mind that as the elderly person’s needs change, new services may need to be added.
Assisted Living Promotes Social Interaction
Some, but not all assisted living facilities promote social interaction. For example, residents who live in larger facilities may live in their own apartments yet still have the option to take their meals in a community dining room. Many assisted living facilities provide onsite activities and there is often transportation provided to offsite activities as well.
