What Are Senior Housing Options?

Learn the four key senior housing options that savvy seniors need to know to benefit them and their families the most.

If you are searching for senior housing there are four options available and they include independent living, assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing.

Independent Living

Most independent living communities offer senior housing to those who are a minimum age of 62, although some will make exceptions for a lower age, so it is always best to ask. The key criteria for acceptance are that an individual is healthy and does not depend on anyone for their daily needs, thus the term independent living.

Assisted Living

The next step in the spectrum of senior housing options is assisted living which provides a number of different levels of care depending on the needs of the individual. The first level, One, allows an individual to maintain the highest level of independence possible, while accepting assistance say, with personal hygiene or getting dressed. The other levels that follow offer even more assistance or care.

Memory Care

Also known as Alzheimer’s care this senior housing option, memory care, provides a secure environment for their residents that ensure their safety while offering them dignified, monitored care. These residences provide secure outdoor courtyards, round-the-clock monitoring, and assistance with their daily care.

Skilled Nursing

Skilled nursing or long-term care provides the most advanced level of care for seniors in need of housing options. Admittance is usually on a doctor’s orders either directly from the hospital, an assisted living facility, a memory care residence or from one’s own home. It is staffed by medical professionals such as Registered Nurses to provide full care when the resident is unable to do so for him or herself.

In summary the four senior housing options are independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing. Understanding the differences will help you make informed decisions to benefit your family today.
