How is Assisted Living Different Than a Nursing Home?
Remember these guidelines when choosing between a nursing home and an assisted living facility.
Though seemingly similar, an assisted living facility and a nursing home differ in structure and purpose. As the name suggests, an assisted living facility offers assistance to its residents. While they are attended to, this arrangement allows its occupants as much freedom as is desired. A nursing home provides much more than just assistance.
Nursing Home
Residents in a nursing home are cared for by licensed and skilled staff. These professionals are available 24 hours a day to ensure proper care of the residents. A nursing home is typical for elderly individuals who do not necessarily need hospitalization but however require constant attention. This may be as a result of chronic medical conditions. The staff is responsible for administering medication at the right time and attending to general day-to-day living activities. These include giving a bath, dressing and assistance with use of the toilet.
Assisted Living
An assisted living facility on the other hand provides a more independent atmosphere. While residents may not be able to live by themselves they do not require constant medical care. It offers a more home-like environment in which activities are often planned. Residents have the opportunity to socialize with each other which contributes greatly to their emotional well being. Among the services offered by an assisted living facility are transportation, meals, laundry services and physical activities. Individuals, rather than a medical scheme are usually responsible for payment of this type of care.
Determining the ideal living facility
The type of care needed should be the major determining factor in choosing between a nursing home and an assisted living facility. For individuals who do not require intensive medical care an assisted living facility is ideal. A nursing home would prove more beneficial to those who are in need of regular medical assistance.
