When faced with finding adequate senior housing many people look to their friends, family, and neighbors for first hand reccommendations. Moving into senior housing is a difficult and sometimes depressing thing to do. Many people realize that this could be their very last move and that it could be the last home they live in. Try to involve your immediate family in the decision too. They might be able to visit more often if the housing complex you choose is closer to their home or place of employment.
Better Business Bureau
Your next step is to check the Better Business Bureau to see if there were any formal complaints made against the senior communities on your list. Being informed will make your decision making process easier. Once you have a few senior or retirement communities on your list you will need to decide on the criteria you will use to compare them.
List your Wants and Must Haves
Make a chart with a list of all the things that you must have and would like to have. You might like to play golf but it would not be a deal breaker if the community did not have a golf course on site. List items like size of the residential unit?, can you have guests,? do they have guest suites that can be rented out to your guests?, Is housekeeping included?, do they have a meal plan?, and What kind of activities do they have and how often do they run them?
Tour the Facilities
Bring this chart with you as you go to tour each senior housing facility. This way you will be sure you do not forget to ask about any of the important items on your must have list. Try to speak to some of the residents as well when you are on the tour. They would know best since they are already living there.
