Why is health reform so controversial?
Five principal reasons why health reform is so controversial.
Almost everyone agrees that our healthcare system is in need of reform. Millions of people are uninsured or underinsured. Skyrocketing medical bills break the backs of those without adequate coverage. Why then is health reform so controversial?
Abortion
Abortion is one of the most divisive and controversial issues not only in society in general, but also in this bill. Pro-life, and even some pro-choice, voters don’t believe that taxpayers should have to fund abortions. Many don’t believe that the President signing an executive order will prevent this.
Fiscally Irresponsible
Enacting legislation, that potentially impacts a great portion of our economy, is fiscally irresponsible in this recession. Some of the outrage centers around the wisdom of increasing taxes and forcing businesses to provide insurance for employees. Will this force more businesses, especially small ones, to cut back on the number of employees? In other words, will this health reform cost jobs when unemployment is already so high?
Medicare Cuts
Senior citizens and baby boomers approaching retirement are concerned about the Medicare cuts. There is uncertainty about if these cuts will result in healthcare rationing. Not only does that idea cause fear, it also makes people very angry.
Medicaid Expansion
Medicaid is expanded in this bill to cover more people. This will cover those people who usually fall through the cracks because they don’t fit current Medicaid guidelines, but can’t afford healthcare insurance. Many states are in deep economic trouble with high unemployment sapping funds. They can’t afford the extra burden of paying for Medicaid for an increased number of recipients.
Government Takeover
Our country remains divided about the role of government and how much impact it should have on our lives. Those opposed to big government view the current health reform as government takeover of health care. Along these same lines, they are opposed to individual citizens being forced to purchase healthcare insurance.
