Who Is Left Uninsured By The Health Care Reform Bill?
The new health care reform bill recently passed by the congress does not ensure that every American will have health insurance. It only assures that every American will have access to health insurance if they want it and can afford it. Some people may elect to pay the fine rather than pay the premium. Everyone who has Medicaid and Medicare now will continue to be insured under the new program. Basically, there is no guarantee that people who are not covered now will have coverage under the new rules that take effect in 2014.
New Uninsured People from the Health Care Reform Bill?
The new health care reform bill gives business the option of insuring their employees or paying a fine if they do not cover their employees adequately. What this could do is create a new class of uninsured people, especially if paying the fine proves to be more cost effective than paying the health cost for employees. Ironically, many of the people who do not have health care insurance now will not have it under the new system either. Instead, it may create a situation where people cannot afford health insurance but may see time in prison if they cannot pay the fine, particularly if a person is self-employed.
Who Is Still Uninsured?
The people who are not insured now may or may not see their employer pick up health coverage for them under the terms of the new health care reform bill. Co-ops started in each state are designed to reduce the cost of health insurance coverage for small business owners, these will initially be funded by the federal government, but the cost will eventually be born by each state. The new health care bill did not create a new nation where all Americans had health insurance. All it does is give people access to it and can punish people or business owners who cannot afford to pay the premiums.
