How Do I Go Gold Mining?
The secrets of mining gold for the modern day hobbiest and what tools you need to get the job done.
Gold mining has become a popular hobby that still uses some of the same technology our ancestors had available hundreds of years ago. There are multiple methods that use technology to find the gold, yet still require physical extraction. Unless you are a large operation that commonly extracts minerals you probably will do it the old fashioned way.
Panning
This is a very hands on style of mining for gold. Pans are used that are shallow and wide. Normally on the banks of a river you would fill the pan with the ground material present. You submerge the pan in water and begin shaking to separate gold from the other materials. Since gold is a dense mineral it will generally settle to the bottom, below any other rocks. During the process you slowly slosh of the top layer of debris, slowly sifting the heavier gold to the bottom. When you get towards the bottom of the pan you should know if you have found some gold. This is a good method for hobbyists, as well as those looking to find new sources of gold for commercial purposes.
Sluicing
Mining this way requires the use of a “sluice box”. This is a slightly more advanced method that can be conducted on large and smaller scales. The idea is to create channels for water to flow downhill through, that contain riffles in the bottom. The idea is to create deadzones where the heavier gold will drop out of the moving material into the recesses at the bottom of the channel. The other material with a lower density will flow out of the box and the gold will remain in the traps.
For a hobbyist there are many places you can try to find gold in states like California and Colorado. The only modern technology that may be useful to an individual miner may be a metal detector.
