WHAT PLAN IS BETTER 401K OR 403B
Retirement is a big issue and a much desired stage in a person’s life. Those who work strive to one day be in position to end their career gracefully and live a free lifestyle with financial security. There are multiple ways to put you in position to retire. One of the most common ways for people to set up their retirement is through a 401K or 403B plan.
WHAT ARE THE 401K AND 403B RETIREMENT PLANS
The 401K and 403B plans are retirement plans where people are able to set aside money for their retirement. This money set aside is usually tax exempt/tax deferred money. It is usually a contribution that reduces your taxable income and thus lowers your tax liability. The main difference between a 401K and 403B plan is that the 401K is usually given to employees of organizations that are for profit whereas 403B plans are usually for non profit organizations such as schools and hospitals.
ANALYSIS OF THE PLANS
So you wonder which plan is better, 401K or 403B? This depends on what organization you’re in. If you’re working at a private for-profit corporation then the 401K is a better option for you than the 403B. In the public sector than the 403B is the better option for you. Another factor to consider is the amount of for profit and non profit organizations are out there. It is estimated that there are more for profit companies in society than there are non profit. Therefore most people work in for profit companies and therefore since this occurrence is more common the 401K is a better option than the 403B.
CONCLUSION OF THE PLANS:
In many ways both plans are equal in many ways but due to the tax deferred funds and reduction in your tax liability. They are also equally beneficial because they both fund a person’s retirement. However the 403B allows you to make contributions that are exempt from tax liability. The 403B also allows a person to leave their plan alone despite changing employers thus eliminating the hassle of changing plans and avoiding additional costs of a 401K. Based on these factors the 403B plan is better than the 401K due to the tax exempt contributions and the ability to change employers without having to transfer your plan around. However other than these facts both plans are equal in many ways.
