What Is The Purpose Of A 401K Plan?

What is a 401k plan and what is its purpose?

Most full time employees have a benefit called a 401K plan. Some people do not fully understand just what the purpose of a 401K plan is a way for employees to save for their retirements. Social Security, insurance, and taxes are taken out of an employee’s paycheck. Some employees also have money taken out of their paycheck to put in their retirement account or 401k account.

How does a 401k plan work?

In a 401k program, employees can have a percentage of their monthly wages deposited into a 401k account. Some employers will match their contributions so that the account can flourish annually. The money is then cashed out when the employee decides to retire.

Why should I have a 401k plan?

It is important to set aside money for your 401k, because sadly Social Security benefits are not always enough to support you after you retire from your job. Everyone will still have living expenses, debts, and most likely medical expenses that need to be covered. Social security benefits do not typically allow employees to live comfortably in their later years. Most employees who are older than sixty five years old have Medicare so they are paying for their prescriptions and other medical necessities out of pocket.

Why do younger employees need 401k plans?

Many younger employees do not care about their retirements so they avoid getting a 401k plan. This is a very costly mistake to make. Younger employees think that they have forty years or more to plan for their retirement so they do not want to have money taken out of their paycheck now. They think that they will be able do it later on when they make even more money. However, as the work force changes, employers may reduce their 401 k contributions so it is a more economical idea to have a 401k plan now,

If you do not currently have a 401k plan, then talk to your employer or contact a financial institution about starting your own, Planning in advance for your retirement is an investment in your future that you cannot afford not to make.
