What Is The Max Contribution To 401K?

What is the max contribution to 401k? What amount will my employer match? Can I stop contributing at any time? Can I contribute more to the 401k plan?

What is the max contribution to a 401k? By IRS standards you can contribute a maximum of $16,500.00 in 2009. This does not include any of the matching funds by your employer or any money that you have made on your investments to date. This amount is set in place each year by the government and changes annually. For employees over the age of fifty there is a “catch-up” provision that allows them to invest an additional $5,500.00 in 2009 without penalties. The catch up provision is set to increase in increments of $500.00 per year until any further government revisions are enacted.

What is the max contribution to 401k by employer?

Your employer can match anywhere from one to one hundred percent of your contribution. Matching policies are set by the individual employer and the investment firm. Many firms set time limits as to when the employee can access the money the company has invested for them. Employers often require a minimum of three years with the company before access to contributing funds is available. Employees working multiple jobs must stay within these limits for all their 401k’s combined each year.

Can I stop contributing to a 401k plan?

If you have hit the maximum contribution limit it may be wise to stop contributing for that year. Any excess that has been contributed over the maximum must be withdrawn prior to April 15th of the following year. If you choose to stop contributing completely to a plan you may not be able to resume contributions at a later date, this will be at your employers or the investment firms discretion.
