401k Benefit: What are they and is it good for me?

401K benefits are tax deferred retirement savings plans offered by employers. They give employees numerous investment options and flexibility to encourage enrollment.

What do I need to do to enroll in a 401k benefit.

Many employers have a website dedicated to the 401k benefits. It has eligibility requirements and legal notices required by law. There is information on the available investment options. Research on the investments performance histories are also available on most 401k sites. Employees just have to specify what percent of their earnings they want deposited and which investments get what percent of the contributions.

What advantages do 401k benefits offer employees?

There are several benefits for employees in 401k plans. First, they are tax deferred. Contributions are made with pretax money, lowering tax liability now. Tax is paid when the employees withdraw the funds at retirement, when their taxable income is lower. The employers pay the maintenance fees for the 401k benefit. Many employers offer a company match. Employers contribute a certain percent of the employees contribution to the 401k plan. As an incentive for continued employment, most employers will not give employees complete control and ownership of the company match until they have worked a specified time period. This usually runs from 1 to the legal maximum of 5 years.

What happens to my 401k benefits if I leave my job before retirement age?

401k participants have several options for their benefits if they leave an employer before they reach retirement age. Direct payment of the funds will have a 10% penalty for early withdrawal. To avoid the penalty the benefits can be left in the employer’s plan until retirement age. They can be transferred to a new employer’s plan. They can also be transferred to a rollover IRA account at any bank or investment company.
