Social Security Answers
Question 4. How are Social Security benefits calculated? People keep telling me it's your top five years of income, but that seems incorrect to me.
Answer. Many retirement plans are based on your top five years of income, but Social Security is not one of them. Assuming that you have worked the minimum of 40 quarters (10 years) to qualify for benefits, Social Security's benefits are based on your earnings throughout your work history, up to a maximum of 35 years. If you work longer than 35 years, your benefit will be based on your top 35 years of income.
